Rajinikanth and Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Film Performs Below Hype –

Coolie opening weekend box office collections:

Rajinikanth, Nagarjuna, Soubin Shahir, Shruti Haasan, Upendra and Aamir Khan’s much-hyped action drama Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, had a big nationwide release this Independence Day weekend. The film was expected to create waves at the box office given the powerhouse combination of Rajinikanth, who is a legend in Tamil cinema, and a strong cast alongside him. However, the weekend numbers tell a different Story, as the film has not lived up to its sky-high expectations.

In Hindi, Coolie has managed around ₹14 crore nett over the weekend. While this is a modest figure, it is considered fair since not much was expected from the dubbed version, especially with Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR’s War 2 dominating screens in the North. Interestingly, the film has still found some traction in Hindi circuits, which will add another ₹3-4 crore nett in the coming days from dubbed versions. Aamir Khan’s cameo doesn’t seem to be helping the film.

Down South, the picture is slightly better but still below expectations for a Rajinikanth film. Tamil Nadu, the superstar’s home territory, has contributed around ₹60 crore nett in three days, which remains the strongest market. Nizam/Andhra followed with ₹36 crore nett, Mysore with ₹21 crore nett, and Kerala with ₹15 crore nett. Collectively, the film has reached an all-India total of around ₹150 crore nett across all languages in its opening weekend.

Though the numbers are huge in scale, Coolie is being judged by the massive standards set for a Rajinikanth-starrer and the director’s name attached to it. The coming weekdays will decide whether the film can maintain steady collections or see a sharp fall. Most probably, it will see a drop.
